Hoodia (Hoodia gordonii) is a cactus-like plant from southern Africa. It is traditionally said to reduce hunger and is sold as a weight-loss supplement.

Good scientific studies have not shown that hoodia helps people lose weight, and some products have been found not to contain real hoodia.

How does it work?

Hoodia was thought to contain a substance that tells the brain you are full. Studies in people have not confirmed this.

Mild stomach upset, wind or loose stools
Feeling sick

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, swelling of the face or lips, or trouble breathing
Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or pale stools (a rare liver reaction to some herbs)
Any new or worrying symptom after starting it
A fast or pounding heartbeat, or high blood pressure

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Follow the dose on the pack.
Swallow the capsule with water.
For weight loss, a healthy diet and regular activity are much more effective. Talk to your doctor about proven options.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take a double dose.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Is Hoodia a medicine?: No. It is a traditional herbal supplement. It is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Can I take Hoodia with my regular medicines?: Some herbs can interact with medicines. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.
How long does Hoodia take to work?: Herbal supplements usually work slowly, if at all. Many people take them for a few weeks to months. If you notice no benefit after 2 to 3 months, it may not be helping you.
