Alli contains Orlistat.

Orlistat is a medicine that helps with weight loss. It works in the gut to stop some of the fat you eat from being absorbed.

It is used together with a reduced-calorie, lower-fat diet and more physical activity. The 60 mg strength is sold without a prescription in some countries, while 120 mg is usually prescribed.

What is it used for?

Weight loss in adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 28 or more with other health risks

How does it work?

Orlistat blocks lipase, an enzyme in the gut that breaks down fat. About a quarter of the fat you eat passes out in your stools instead of being absorbed.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not take it if you have long-term problems absorbing food, or cholestasis (bile flow problems).
It can reduce the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Take a multivitamin at bedtime.
It can affect how some medicines work, including ciclosporin, levothyroxine, warfarin, seizure medicines and some HIV medicines.
If you use the contraceptive pill and get severe diarrhoea, use condoms as well.
Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Alli can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Oily spotting from the bottom
Wind with oily discharge
Urgent need to open your bowels
Oily or fatty stools
Stomach pain

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Severe stomach pain or yellowing skin (possible liver or gallbladder problems)
Signs of an allergic reaction

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one capsule with each main meal that contains fat, up to three times a day.
You can take it during the meal or up to 1 hour after.
If you skip a meal or eat a meal without fat, skip that dose.
Keep fat to about 30% of your calories, spread evenly across meals.
Take a multivitamin at bedtime, at least 2 hours after orlistat.

If you miss a dose: If it has been more than 1 hour since your meal, skip the dose.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Why do I get oily stools on Alli?: Fat that is not absorbed passes out in your stools. Eating less fat reduces this.
How much weight will I lose with Alli?: Results vary. Most people lose a little more than with diet alone. Your doctor may stop it if you have not lost 5% of your weight after 12 weeks.
Do I still need to diet with Alli?: Yes. It works best with a lower-calorie, lower-fat diet.
