Diflucan contains Fluconazole.
Fluconazole is an antifungal medicine. It treats infections caused by yeasts and other fungi, such as thrush in the vagina, mouth or throat.
For vaginal thrush, a single 150 mg capsule is often all that is needed. Higher doses are used in hospital for serious fungal infections of the blood, brain or other organs.
What is it used for?
- Vaginal thrush (yeast infection), including in partners with thrush on the penis
- Thrush in the mouth, throat or food pipe
- Serious fungal infections, such as cryptococcal meningitis
- Preventing fungal infections in people with weak immune systems
How does it work?
Fungi need a substance called ergosterol to build their cell walls. Fluconazole stops them making it, so the fungus cannot grow and dies off.
