Grifulvin V contains Griseofulvin.

Griseofulvin is an antifungal medicine taken by mouth. It is used for fungal infections of the scalp, skin, hair and nails, especially ringworm of the scalp in children.

What is it used for?

Ringworm of the scalp (tinea capitis)
Ringworm of the body, groin or feet that does not clear with creams
Some fungal nail infections

How does it work?

Griseofulvin builds up in new skin, hair and nail cells and stops fungi from dividing. As the old infected tissue is replaced, the infection clears.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not take it if you are pregnant or have liver failure or porphyria.
Women should avoid pregnancy during treatment and for 1 month after. Men should not father a child during treatment and for 6 months after.
It can make the contraceptive pill less effective. Use condoms as well.
It can make you more sensitive to sunlight.
It can make the effects of alcohol stronger.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Grifulvin V can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Headache
Upset stomach or diarrhoea
Feeling tired or dizzy
Rash or skin sensitive to sunlight

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Yellowing of the skin or eyes
A severe rash with blisters or peeling skin
Sore throat with fever, or unusual bruising

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day, or split into two doses, as your doctor tells you.
Take it with or after a fatty meal (such as one containing milk, cheese or meat). This helps your body absorb it.
A common adult dose is 500 mg to 1 g a day.
Treatment usually lasts several weeks to months. Keep taking it until your doctor tells you to stop.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
