Elavil contains Amitriptyline.

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant. In higher doses it treats depression. In much lower doses it is widely used for nerve pain, preventing migraine and headaches, and helping with sleep when pain keeps you awake.

What is it used for?

Nerve pain (for example after shingles, or from diabetes)
Preventing migraine and tension headaches
Depression (higher doses)
Long-term pain such as fibromyalgia

How does it work?

Amitriptyline raises the levels of serotonin and noradrenaline in the brain and spinal cord. At low doses, this calms pain signals from nerves. At higher doses, it improves mood.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Antidepressants can, rarely, cause thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in people under 25 and in the first few weeks. Tell someone close to you that you are taking it and ask them to tell you if they notice changes in your mood or behaviour.
Do not take it with, or within 2 weeks of, an MAOI antidepressant (such as phenelzine or selegiline), or with linezolid or methylene blue.
Taking it with other medicines that raise serotonin (other antidepressants, tramadol, triptans for migraine, lithium, St John's wort) can cause serotonin syndrome.
It can raise the risk of bleeding, especially with aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or blood thinners.
Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, bipolar disorder or mania, glaucoma, heart problems, liver or kidney problems, or diabetes.
Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, electric-shock feelings, bad dreams and irritability. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly.
It may make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Do not take it if you have recently had a heart attack or have heart rhythm problems. Tell your doctor about any heart disease.
Tell your doctor if you have glaucoma, trouble passing urine, an enlarged prostate, constipation, an overactive thyroid or porphyria.
An overdose can be very dangerous. Keep it out of the reach of children and others at risk.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Elavil can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Feeling sick (nausea), especially in the first 1 to 2 weeks
Headache
Trouble sleeping or feeling sleepy
Sweating
Dry mouth
Lower sex drive, or trouble reaching orgasm or getting an erection
Constipation
Blurred vision
Dizziness when standing up
Weight gain

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life
Feeling very high, overexcited or reckless (mania)
Fever, sweating, shaking, muscle twitching, fast heartbeat and confusion (possible serotonin syndrome)
A fit (seizure)
Unusual bleeding or bruising, or black stools
Confusion, headache and weakness, especially in older people (low sodium)
A fast, pounding or uneven heartbeat, or fainting
Being unable to pass urine
Eye pain with blurred vision and red eye

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take it once a day, in the evening or at bedtime, because it often makes you sleepy.
Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food.
For pain or migraine, a common dose is 10 mg at night, slowly raised to 25 mg to 75 mg. For depression, higher doses are used.
It can take a few weeks to feel the full effect on pain.

If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

How long does Elavil take to work?: Some people notice better sleep or energy in 1 to 2 weeks, but it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full benefit on mood. Keep taking it even if you do not feel different straight away.
How long will I need to take Elavil?: Most people take it for at least 6 months after they feel better, to stop the depression or anxiety coming back. Your doctor will review this with you.
Can I drink alcohol with Elavil?: It is best to avoid alcohol. It can make you more drowsy and can make depression and anxiety worse.
Is Elavil addictive?: No, antidepressants are not addictive. But stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms, so always reduce slowly with your doctor.
Why take Elavil at night?: It often makes people drowsy, so taking it at bedtime can help you sleep and reduces daytime sleepiness.
I don't have depression. Why was I given Elavil?: At low doses, amitriptyline is a common treatment for nerve pain and headaches. It does not mean your doctor thinks you are depressed.
