5 reviews for Trazodone
Trazodone is an antidepressant. It is often used in lower doses to help people who have trouble sleeping, especially when they also have depression or anxiety.
What is it used for?
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Sleep problems (off-label, at low doses)
How does it work?
Trazodone changes the balance of serotonin in the brain and blocks histamine. This improves mood and makes people feel sleepy.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- Antidepressants can, rarely, cause thoughts of self-harm or suicide, especially in people under 25 and in the first few weeks. Tell someone close to you that you are taking it and ask them to tell you if they notice changes in your mood or behaviour.
- Do not take it with, or within 2 weeks of, an MAOI antidepressant (such as phenelzine or selegiline), or with linezolid or methylene blue.
- Taking it with other medicines that raise serotonin (other antidepressants, tramadol, triptans for migraine, lithium, St John's wort) can cause serotonin syndrome.
- It can raise the risk of bleeding, especially with aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen or blood thinners.
- Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, bipolar disorder or mania, glaucoma, heart problems, liver or kidney problems, or diabetes.
- Do not stop taking it suddenly. This can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, electric-shock feelings, bad dreams and irritability. Your doctor will lower the dose slowly.
- It may make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive until you know how it affects you, and avoid alcohol.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Rarely, it can cause a long, painful erection (priapism). Get help straight away if an erection lasts more than 4 hours.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Trazodone can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick (nausea), especially in the first 1 to 2 weeks
- Headache
- Trouble sleeping or feeling sleepy
- Sweating
- Dry mouth
- Lower sex drive, or trouble reaching orgasm or getting an erection
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life
- Feeling very high, overexcited or reckless (mania)
- Fever, sweating, shaking, muscle twitching, fast heartbeat and confusion (possible serotonin syndrome)
- A fit (seizure)
- Unusual bleeding or bruising, or black stools
- Confusion, headache and weakness, especially in older people (low sodium)
- An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it after a meal or snack. If you take it once a day, take it at bedtime.
- For depression, a common adult dose is 150 mg a day, up to 300 mg (higher in hospital). For sleep, doctors often use 25 mg to 100 mg at night.
- Swallow the tablet with water.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QHow long does Trazodone take to work?
- A
Some people notice better sleep or energy in 1 to 2 weeks, but it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to feel the full benefit on mood. Keep taking it even if you do not feel different straight away.
- QHow long will I need to take Trazodone?
- A
Most people take it for at least 6 months after they feel better, to stop the depression or anxiety coming back. Your doctor will review this with you.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Trazodone?
- A
It is best to avoid alcohol. It can make you more drowsy and can make depression and anxiety worse.
- QIs Trazodone addictive?
- A
No, antidepressants are not addictive. But stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal-like symptoms, so always reduce slowly with your doctor.
