Drug Information
3 reviews for Indinavir
Indinavir is an HIV medicine from a group called protease inhibitors. It is always used together with other HIV medicines.
It is an older HIV medicine and is rarely used today, because newer medicines are easier to take and cause fewer side effects.
What is it used for?
- HIV-1 infection, as part of combination treatment
How does it work?
HIV needs an enzyme called protease to make new working virus particles. Indinavir blocks this enzyme, so new viruses cannot mature and infect other cells.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- HIV medicines must be taken every day, exactly as prescribed. Missing doses can let the virus become resistant.
- These medicines do not cure HIV. With good treatment the amount of virus can become so low that it cannot be passed on through sex, but they do not protect against other infections.
- HIV medicines react with many other medicines, including some for cholesterol, heartburn, erection problems, TB, seizures and herbal remedies like St John's wort. Always check with your pharmacist first.
- Tell your doctor if you have liver problems (including hepatitis B or C), diabetes, haemophilia or heart problems.
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
- Indinavir can cause kidney stones. You must drink at least 1.5 litres (about 6 glasses) of water every day.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Indinavir can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Feeling sick, stomach pain or diarrhoea
- Headache or tiredness
- Dry skin, changes in taste or hair loss
- Changes in body fat
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark urine
- A severe rash, especially with fever, blisters or sore mouth
- Signs of a new infection or inflammation soon after starting treatment, as your immune system gets stronger
- Sudden pain in the side or back, or blood in your urine (possible kidney stones)
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it exactly as your doctor tells you, usually every 8 hours, together with your other HIV medicines.
- Take it with water 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, or with a light low-fat snack.
- The usual adult dose is 800 mg every 8 hours (lower if taken with ritonavir).
- Drink at least 1.5 litres of water spread through each day.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once. Try hard not to miss doses.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep the capsules in the original bottle with the drying sachet, below 25°C (77°F), and away from damp.
- QWhy do I need to drink so much water with Indinavir?
- A
Indinavir can form crystals in the kidneys. Lots of water helps flush it through and prevents kidney stones.
- QCan I take Indinavir with food?
- A
Take it on an empty stomach or with a light, low-fat snack. A heavy meal lowers how much you absorb.
- QWhy is Indinavir not used much anymore?
- A
Newer HIV medicines are taken less often and cause fewer side effects. Your doctor may talk to you about switching.
