Feldene contains Piroxicam.

Piroxicam is a long-acting anti-inflammatory painkiller. It is used for the pain and stiffness of arthritis. Because it has a higher risk of stomach side effects, it is usually used when other painkillers have not worked.

What is it used for?

Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Ankylosing spondylitis

How does it work?

Piroxicam blocks the enzymes that make pain and swelling chemicals. It lasts a long time, so one dose a day is enough.

This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Do not take it if you have ever had a stomach ulcer or bleeding, or if you are allergic to aspirin or other anti-inflammatory painkillers (for example, if they made your asthma worse).
Do not take it if you have severe heart failure, severe kidney or liver disease, or in the last 3 months of pregnancy.
Anti-inflammatory painkillers can slightly raise the risk of heart attack and stroke, especially at high doses or with long use. Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or smoke.
Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers (such as ibuprofen, naproxen or high-dose aspirin).
Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, steroids, SSRI antidepressants, lithium, methotrexate, water tablets or blood pressure medicines.
Use the lowest dose for the shortest time needed.
Older people are more likely to have stomach bleeding and kidney problems.
It has a higher risk of stomach bleeding than some other painkillers. Your doctor may also prescribe a stomach-protecting medicine.
Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.

Like all medicines, Feldene can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.

Common side effects

Indigestion, heartburn or stomach pain
Feeling sick
Diarrhoea or constipation
Headache or dizziness

These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.

Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:

Black, tarry stools, or vomiting blood or what looks like coffee grounds (stomach bleeding)
Chest pain, or sudden weakness, numbness or trouble speaking
Wheezing or trouble breathing
Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a severe rash with blisters
Passing much less urine, or swelling of the legs

This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take one capsule once a day with or after food.
The usual adult dose is 20 mg once a day.
Swallow the capsule with a glass of water.

If you miss a dose: If you take it regularly, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never take two doses at once.

If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.

How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.

Should I take Feldene with food?: Yes. Taking it with or after food helps protect your stomach.
Can I take Feldene with paracetamol (acetaminophen)?: Yes, they can usually be taken together, as they work in different ways. Do not take it with other anti-inflammatory painkillers.
Can I drink alcohol with Feldene?: It is best to limit alcohol, as it raises the risk of stomach bleeding.
