9 reviews for Prazosin
Prazosin is an alpha blocker that lowers blood pressure. It is also used for urine problems from an enlarged prostate, Raynaud's phenomenon, and, off-label, to reduce nightmares in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
What is it used for?
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Symptoms of an enlarged prostate
- Raynaud's phenomenon
- Nightmares linked to PTSD (off-label)
How does it work?
Prazosin relaxes the muscles in blood vessel walls and in the prostate. This lowers blood pressure and helps urine flow. In the brain, it blocks some effects of stress chemicals, which may reduce nightmares.
This information is written in simple words to help you understand this product. It does not replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
Read these points before you start. If any of them apply to you, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
- High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so keep taking your medicine even when you feel well. Stopping can make your blood pressure rise again.
- It can make you feel dizzy, especially when you stand up quickly or when you first start. Get up slowly from sitting or lying down.
- Alcohol can make dizziness worse and raise blood pressure over time. Keep it to small amounts.
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
- Have your blood pressure checked regularly, as your doctor advises.
- The first dose can make your blood pressure drop quickly and make you faint. Take your first dose at bedtime.
- Tell your doctor if you are going to have cataract surgery. This medicine can affect the eye during the operation.
- Tell your doctor if you take erection medicines such as sildenafil or tadalafil, as they can lower blood pressure further.
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist about every other medicine, vitamin or herbal product you use.
- Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children.
Like all medicines, Prazosin can cause side effects, but not everybody gets them.
Common side effects
- Dizziness, especially when standing up
- Feeling tired or weak
- Headache
- Stuffy nose
These are usually mild and often get better as your body gets used to it. Tell your doctor if they bother you or do not go away.
Stop using it and get medical help straight away if you notice:
- Fainting, or feeling like you are going to faint
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing
- An erection that lasts longer than 4 hours
This is not a complete list. If you notice anything unusual, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
- Take it 2 or 3 times a day, as your doctor tells you.
- The first dose is usually 0.5 mg or 1 mg at bedtime. Your doctor will raise it slowly.
- You can take it with or without food.
If you miss a dose: Take it as soon as you remember the same day. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Never take two doses at once.
If you use too much: Contact your doctor, a poison control centre or your local emergency number straight away, even if you feel fine. Take the pack with you.
How to store it: Keep it in its original pack at room temperature (below 25°C / 77°F), away from heat, damp and direct sunlight. Do not use it after the expiry date.
- QDo I need to take Prazosin for the rest of my life?
- A
Often, yes. High blood pressure is usually a long-term condition. Your doctor will review your treatment over time. Do not stop without talking to them.
- QCan I drink alcohol with Prazosin?
- A
Small amounts are usually fine, but alcohol can make you dizzy and can raise your blood pressure. Try to keep within safe limits.
- QWhat else can help my blood pressure?
- A
Eating less salt, staying active, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking and cutting down on alcohol all help your medicine work better.
- QWhy should I take my first dose of Prazosin at bedtime?
- A
The first dose can make your blood pressure drop quickly. Lying down in bed lowers the chance of falling if you feel dizzy.
